Create your own template using Avery Design Pro:

Although I am sure this program is intended for use with Avery brand labels, they do have a custom label template feature. This allows you to create your own templates – and therefore will work with any label sheet you purchase, Avery brand or otherwise.

1.        When ADP opens select “Design from Scratch” or from the design screen you can click on  File>New>Project from Scratch.  Make sure you have INKJET & LASER LABELS selected in the FORMAT box.

2.        If your label is compatible with an Avery template #, you can select the Avery product # from the drop down list. (if not, see CREATING A CUSTOM TEMPLATE below) Double click on the item and the main design screen will appear.

3.        Use your mouse to find the “New Tab” option in the bottom left corner and click on it until you’ve added the proper number of tabs necessary for your particular job.

If you are creating a custom label that does not have a corresponding Avery size follow these simple instructions:

1.        From the opening window select Design from Scratch, then click on the Custom button on the right side of the Create Template window.

2.        In the next window enter a unique item number, making sure your unique ID is not a match to any of the pre-existing Avery ID numbers (you can also use text, for example, you could name your template soap label 2x2 instead of assigning it a number).

3.        Next enter a name for your template.  Choose your panel shape, then enter the number of panels.  (i.e. in this case a PANEL is a label) For PANEL MARGINS enter side margin in HORIZONTAL and top margin in VERTICAL. For PANEL size, enter label size. For PANEL SPACING, enter measurement that corresponds to space between labels both horizontally and vertically.

 4.        Select Insert > Text and a text box will be inserted for you.  You can now begin your design.

5.        Right click inside the text box to quickly select or change the font for that text box. Your frequently used formatting tools are available on the Text toolbar.

6.        When you select multiple objects, a frame with eight handles appears around all the objects. If the handles are white, you can resize the multiple objects. If the handles are black, you can move the objects, but not resize them. Edits are applied to all selected objects.

*VERY IMPORTANT:  NEVER CREATE YOUR DESIGN ON THE MASTER TAB. SELECT ‘LABEL ONE’ AND CREATE YOUR DESIGN IN THERE.  IF YOU DESIGN YOUR LABEL ON THE MASTER TAB ADJUSTMENTS THAT ARE NECESSARY FOR PROPER PRINTING ALIGNMENT CAN NOT BE MADE.  THEREFORE IT IS CRUCIAL THAT YOUR ORIGINAL LABEL DESIGN BE CREATED IN LABEL 1, THEN COPIED AND PASTED INTO SUBSEQUENT TABS.

General Label Tips:

TIP #1– many label sheets have different top and bottom margins and different left and right margins. Choose the cleanest measurement (for example, choose .5 over .4375) for the top and side entered and remember which you choose, so that your label sheet can be properly inserted into the printer.

TIP #2 – many printers have different product type settings, you should choose glossy if your label surface is glossy, transparent if your label surface is clear, etc. If you are not getting the result you want on a normal paper setting, you can experiment with this feature. For example, our laser printer must be set on transparency to print correctly on our pastel line. (We are not sure why this is, but if you are having a problem with a certain product you might try this – when you hit print, choose properties and find in your printer dialog box where you can choose PAPER TYPE or MEDIA TYPE and do so to match your paper finish.

TIP#3 – every printer is different, every printer’s feed is different. Templates are guidelines only, you should expect to have to make minor adjustments prior to printing.
